San Fernando Mayor Kazim Hosein checks out the
1952 Plymouth Cranbrook at the opening of the Brij
Maharaj Auto and Heritage Museum at Hubert
Rance street, Vistabella on Saturday.

Car enthusiasts were transported back in time
on Saturday as San Fernando businessman Brij
Maharaj unveiled his museum of vintage cars at
his Vistabella home.
Maharaj, who has been building and repairing cars
for more than five decades, unveiled automobiles
dating back to 1917.
A shining red 1917 Model T Ford which has wooden
wheels and kerosene operated brake lights, was the
oldest of the lot. It was restored by Maharaj in the
1970 s after being found almost buried under a tree
Also on display was the newer 1930 Ford Model
A, a 1934 Chevrolet Deluxe and a 1952 Plymouth
Cranbrook. The 1946 Vauxhall Deluxe, in which
Maharaj and his wife Debbie got married, was also
on display, along with a 1928 Oakland Roadster.
Historian and Sunday Guardian columnist Angelo
Bissessarsingh said unlike the vintage automobile
museum in Barbados, Maharaj s Auto and Heritage
Museum had a history of its own.
He said as a child, Maharaj had a passion for
vintage vehicles and when he opened his own garage
after high school and began his collection. Bisses-
sarsingh said Maharaj has an "inordinate under-
standing of mechanics to repair the vehicles, all of
which are drivable."
"Maharaj tears down the vehicles and restores
them down to every nut and bolt. His workmanship
is unimaginable. He has preserved classics and for
this he should be commended," Bissessarsingh said.
Showing a display of advertisements from the 18th
Century, Bissessarsingh said the museum will be
open to the public. Also on display was a selection
of motorcycles some of which were used by the
French Army. These include a 1950 Lambretta 150,
a Norton and a Harley Davidson.
Maharaj s daughter Kebrina said some of the
antique cars were used in the local movie Mystic
Masseur and Kim Johnson s 90-minute docu-drama,
Pan! Our Music Odyssey. She said anyone who wants
to tour the museum can make an appointment.
San Fernando Mayor Kazim Hosein also praised
the businessman for his contribution to the preser-
vation of history.
