Daniel Shem Henry was one of the foreign designers to
showcase at DPE Model Management's event Plus& Pearls:
Gems of the Eras; A Tea Party Affair. This designer is no
stranger to our country's culture and he has grown so much in
love with what we had to offer. We got to know this exciting
Kimberly Marshall: Who is Daniel Shem Henry ?
Daniel Shem Henry: I'm a young aspiring Antiguan designer
whose goal and dream in life is to be able to touch the world with
my many talents and artistic fashion styles and designs. I am the
CEO and Founder of Mr. Henre Designs which started in 2012
and has been rapidly growing into fashion success. The motto
and aim of my designs basically came from making a difference
and just staying true to who you are. I believe that being unique is
always better than being common and its takes a lot of confi-
dence and motivation to do the kind of work that I do. I've always
had a love for fashion and the arts and was always able to trans-
form the basic into something stunning. I'm kind, down to earth,
a bit funny at times but most of all charming and ambitious.
KM: What or who inspired you to do fashion? Where did you
get your inspiration?
DSH: My inspiration came from my mother who has always sup-
ported and motivated me to go after what I deserve. She
thought me the power of believing in myself and also she nur-
tured my talents at a tender age as to secure what she said was
ordained for me. She has been my biggest inspiration ever since
day one mainly because she understands me and thought me
the values of a good character which later helped me with my
venture into the fashion world. She is also a 'fashionista' by heart
and over the years watching her I developed a greater love for
KM: Why plus size fashion?
DSH: Honestly, I would say I dived into plus size fashion or more
like I kind of stumbled into it. At first, I had no clue or idea as to
what I was doing or going to do but it all got easier with the help
of a dear friend and fellow fashionist' Renee Buttaz Edwards
Ambrose who brought light to my approach into plus size fash-
ion. She was there every step of the way as I created my first
ever plus size line. Her confidence, demeanor and out of this
world attitude has managed to inspire me and mold me into a
more open minded and plus size lover.
KM: What are your thoughts about the plus size industry at
home (Antigua), in Trinidad (what you have seen thus far) and
DSH: I never really paid attention as to the alarming increase of
fashionistas in the plus size arena until lately when I was given
the opportunity to showcase my work among confident and
driven plus size models. (I would have to say that the market in
my country is not as big as it is in Trinidad however I saw real dif-
ference in the girls here as opposed to the ones in my country.
The ladies that I've met in Trinidad took pride in themselves, they
were ready to let the world know that big is beautiful and was
confident to rock anything given to them, attributes I found it
very hard to find that within the plus size society in Antigua).
KM: How would you describe your designs?
DSH: My designs could be described as unique, fashionable,
wearable, modern and breathtaking. I see my designs as works of
art, making a difference without having to say a word. To me it's
like food to the eyes and it reaches and imprints on the wearer.
KM: Who do you consider to be your style icon and why?
DSH: Many have found it strange whenever I say that Beyoncé
is my style icon. I find her be to stunning and breathtaking in
whatever she wears and she knows how and what to wear at
the right time. However, other international designers such as
Fendi, Michael Costello and Dior just to name a few.
KM: Your personal style is...
DSH: My personal style is said to be very sophisticated, grown
and sexy and it has traces of culture, art and class.
KM: What's next for Daniel?
DSH: The next step for me would be New York Fashion week , as
it is my hope to showcase on an international level I'm also in the
final planning process of creating and building my first ever bou-
tique where I can sell and showcase my designs.
